The Teachers’ Dignity Coalition (TDC) is calling on candidates in the upcoming elections to make the proposed P15,000 across-the-board salary increase for public school teachers a priority legislative agenda, stressing that education reform must include better compensation for educators. The bill seeking the salary hike is currently pending before the Senate, and the TDC is urging lawmakers to act on the measure with urgency.
TDC Chairperson Benjo Basas emphasized that while the Second Congressional Commission on Education (EDCOM 2) has conducted a comprehensive review of the education system, it has not laid out a concrete plan for improving teachers’ salaries and benefits.
“The work of EDCOM 2 is valuable in diagnosing the problems in our education system, but sadly, no clear direction has been provided when it comes to the salaries and benefits of our teachers,” Basas stated.
He further stressed that the upcoming elections should serve as an avenue for educators and education advocates to push candidates, particularly those running for legislative positions, to take a firm stand on the salary increase.
“We challenge all candidates to make a clear commitment to supporting the P15,000 across-the-board increase for teachers. This must be a non-negotiable part of their platform. Our teachers’ salaries have remained stagnant while inflation continues to rise, making it difficult for them to sustain their families and perform their duties effectively,” Basas added.
The TDC noted that while past administrations have made incremental salary adjustments, these have been insufficient to address the growing economic challenges faced by public school teachers. The group maintains that a substantial pay increase is necessary to uplift the morale of educators and improve the quality of teaching in the country.
Basas also pointed out that beyond salary hikes, the government must implement long-term reforms that include benefits such as improved healthcare, housing assistance, and legal support for teachers facing administrative and legal battles.
“We must go beyond token increases. Teachers are the backbone of our education system, and investing in them is investing in the future of our nation. It is time for our policymakers to prioritize teachers and ensure that they receive what they rightfully deserve,” Basas said.
With the elections fast approaching, the TDC vowed to actively engage with candidates and the public to ensure that the salary increase and other teacher welfare issues are at the forefront of national discussions.
“The decision on who will sit in Congress is crucial in determining the fate of our teachers. We urge our colleagues in the education sector to scrutinize the platforms of candidates and vote for those who genuinely support teachers’ rights and welfare,” Basas concluded.
