The Department of Education (DepEd) in Baguio has proposed to remove all flower vases in classrooms to eliminate breeding places of dengue-carrying mosquitoes.

Aileen Refuerzo, city chief information officer, said on Monday the proposal was made by Dr. Roger Sinot who represented DepEd during the Baguio City Anti-Vector Borne Disease Committee meeting on Feb. 25, which was convened by the City Health Services Office (CHSO) to address the incidence of dengue in the city.

From Jan. 1 to Feb. 22, 2025, the CHSO Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (CESU) recorded 171 dengue cases, lower than the 178 cases on the same period last year.

However, three deaths have been recorded so far this year -- a 78-year-old male from West Bayan Park, a 57-year-old male from Kias, and a nine-year-old boy from Pacdal.

Refuerzo said the city government is intensifying efforts to curb the rising number of dengue cases in the city by enforcing stricter sanitation regulations.

Dr. Soraya Faculo, Division Superintendent of the Baguio Schools Division Office, reminded school officials about anti-dengue activities such as emptying containers with stagnant water, including flower vases.

Dr. Celia Flor Brillantes, city health officer, said they are implementing the “Consolidated anti-mosquito borne disease” ordinance that charges any household found storing water in containers that are not tightly or properly covered a PHP1,000 fine; keeping and storing water-filled vases and using ornamental plants with pot saucer and exiled plants for a longer period; keeping, storing, or stowing of discarded tires; keeping artificial or man-made containers including natural containers that serve as breeding sites for mosquitoes; conducting chemical control methods without clearance from the Department of Health (DOH) or the CHSO; and all other sites which may cause the breeding of mosquitoes.

Violators are also required to render a three-day community service.

She also reiterated the need to seek immediate medical attention if symptoms such as fever, dizziness, and vomiting, persist.
